Understanding network topology and its types

Network topology

Network topology describes physical structure and flow of data in a network.
There are two types of network topology

  1. Physical topology
  2. Logical topology

Physical topology

Its describes the physical wiring,cabling and a shape of a network.
Types of physical topology

  • Bus topology
  • Star topology
  • Ring topology
  • Mesh topology
  • Tree topology
  • Hybrid topology
Bus topology

Network node are connected to each other in leaner format .A T-connector connects the main cable to each node.The main cable is known as bus. A bus also allow bidirectional data transmission.A signal bounce results occur in bus topology.Advantage,it is easy to set up at low costs.Disadvantage, faults in node is difficult to detect,the bus topology is not suitable for a large network and heavy traffic.

Star topology

Network nodes are connected to each other to a central device(hub,bridge,switch) when central device goes down then all network effected.The star topology easy to maintain and reliable.Advantage, The failure of one node does not affect the network,compared to bus it gives better performance.disadvantage, network has too much dependency on a central device.

Ring topology

Net work nodes are connected to each other in a circle.The ring topology used in engineering and manufacturing industries.The use of a ring topology provides better performances than the bus topology, even when network load increases.disadvantage, if one network fails, then entire network fails,data transfer in the ring topology is slow.

Mesh topology

Network nodes are connected to each other via more than one links.It is costly topology.Advantage, data transfer and communication is very fast and reliable in the network and the failure of one node does not affect data transfer.Disadvantage, it is a high costs topology compared to other network topology.

Tree topology

Network nodes are arrange in a hierarchy. The internet is  the best example of tree topology.Advantage, it can be expanded easily, in a tree topology if one node is fails does not affect network.Disadvantage, in a tree topology one or more node adding is difficult,because of its basic structure,it relies heavily on the main network communication cable.

Hybrid topology

It is a combination of more than one topology.Advantage, the high privacy and security that a hybrid network offers.Disadvantage, difficult installation and reconnection .
